Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects up to 33% of the male population, with the prevalence increasing with age and in those with co-morbid vascular conditions such as diabetes.

ED is now commonly treated with phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors with Viagra having emerged as the first effective oral agent and is still the current gold standard therapy with peak global annual sales of US$1.9 billion. See diagram.

The introduction of Viagra has generated media interest in male sexual dysfunction and other PDE inhibitors such as tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) have now penetrated the market.

There is also evidence to suggest that the ‘next generation’ of PDE inhibitors are on the way, with avanafil showing the potential for multiple daily use.

New approaches

URODOC has significant experience in this disease area with one of our staff being instrumental in the development and marketing of Viagra.

URODOC knows that there is still unrealised market potential for effective ED treatments especially for men with cardiovascular disease.

In this increasingly saturated market, URODOC knows that specialist knowledge and the ability to create product differentiation is crucial in product development and successful marketing campaigns.

Differing mechanistic approaches, combination therapies and novel methods of application present some scope for market opportunities in ED.

There is also market potential for agents that address not only ED but associated sexual disorders such as low desire.
